Samsung Mobile phone service boxes
Existing customer briefed in requirements for a new style of box that would house all sizes of mobile smart phones for their servicing area, to return the customers serviced phones in an upmarket presentation box.
We needed to replicate the look of the existing Samsung new smart mobile boxes, but without any artwork being supplied from corporate head office.
Tooling was ordered, dies & knives made to compose the 3 separate pieces making up the box. Foam inserts were outsourced & cut to size to fit inside lid & tray. Sheets were printed to a revised colour corrected sample proof & mounting/ gluing of sheets to boards was followed by the 3-piece box make up process. The boxes were required completely made up with foam pieces inserted, ready for shipping for a store opening the following day. ‘QA tested’ labels were made to be applied to each of the boxes which needed to be removable so the base box paper would not tear, so the boxes could be re-used. From initial concept & briefing to finished production, although extended through alterations & re-modelling, actual production time was effectively completed in just less than 2 weeks.
Pre-Production, sampling & development
A new knifeline was required for the 3 part boxes - a box engineer was briefed. The specs needed to include, a fit to any size mobile in the Samsung range from ‘Galaxy S5’ to ‘Note’.
A blank sample was created in the same board which would be used in the finished item to check fit. Two different design styles were briefed in – A basic black version & a wood grain finish, similar to the existing new mobile box model, were suggested as options in a high gloss finish.
Variations of wood grains were trialled & basic colour correction was applied & printouts were digitally imaged & mounted to boards after celloglaze lamination.
Knifelines were positioned & handmade samples were provided to the customer.
Over a series of management meetings, it was decided the gloss look was not right for the product & a new brief required the boxes to retain the wood grain finish but in a matt uncoated look. New samples were made with foam inserts being added for the protection of the mobile device. Further developments were briefed in to reduce the height of the boxes, so a ‘snug fit’ was achieved for all mobile devices & some design alterations made.
